Tang Bioinformatics Lab

Dr. Shaojun Tang is an Assistant Professor of Biostatistics at Virginia Commonwealth University. He received interdisciplinary training in Genetics & Genomics (Ph.D.) and Computer Engineering (M.Sc.) from the University of Florida. Dr. Tang’s research lies at the intersection of bioinformatics, cancer genomics, and applied artificial intelligence (AI), with a focus on the integrative analysis of large-scale molecular and digital health data to elucidate the molecular mechanisms of human disease.

Research Interests

Dr. Tang’s methodological research centers on the development of innovative machine learning and AI-driven frameworks for multi-omics data integration, digital pathology, and precision medicine. By leveraging deep learning and large language models, his work aims to identify mechanistic signatures, biomarkers, and therapeutic targets that enable translational discovery and individualized treatment strategies.

Research Accomplishments

Dr. Tang has developed multiple original and widely used software tools, including PASTA, PPA, fCI, MIXBend, neoantigenR, Rene, and HiCMamba, which address fundamental challenges in genomic, proteomic, chromatin conformation, and digital health data analysis. Dr. Tang’s research has been published in more than 50 peer-reviewed journal articles, including Cell, Nucleic Acids Research, and the Journal of Internal Medicine, among other leading journals, and has received over 2,600 citations.
